Öland day 3

Today when we woke up we could finally see our surroundings for the first time. The fog had lifted and we could see the ocean about 50 m away, the fields on the other side as well as the wind turbine about 100 m away.
We hurried to eat some breakfast so that we could get going quickly and have a whole day to explore Öland. From our night stop we continued up the western coastline, on traktor roads with me at the wheel. Our first stop was at Skurkvarnarna or the scrubbing-mills (scrubbing limestones to be more smooth) in Jordhamn. A really nice change from the “regular” mills that we have been seeing on Öland.
Our next stop was the Gillberga rauks. I love walking around the rauks and seeing their amazing shapes, but these shrink in comparison to the Gotland rauks.
We continued up the coastline and drove by a heard of bulls, and this one was my favorite and what seemed to be the leader since he had the largest and the pointiest horns.
Byrums rauks was the next stop, nice but again, not that spectacular.
Then we stopped off for lunch, hot dogs, close to the Thuja (an American tree sort) forest. And these are the utensils that had to be washed after the lunch, not too shabby ;-).
As we were packing up after lunch, we saw that a new cache had been layed out at Sandby Strand (beach) and being the first to find a cache is kind of fun, FirstToFind (FTF) so off we went to find it. It was about 13 km south of our location and upon arrival we managed to find it quickly and it was fun to FTF another cache.
After the FTF we continued up the coastline to, Kyxnäs and then on to Byxelkrok and had an ice cream. The sun just started shining as we got to Byxelkrok but unfortunelty when we had bought our ice creams the sun was gone.
We had heard alot of good things about Neptuni åkrar, Neptuni fields, a strech of beach that Carl von Linnius mounted as a beach that only Neptune himself could have created. It was a nice place, but not as specially as I thought it would have been, but I think that it might be more beautiful in the summertime when the blue flowers cover the area leading into the sea.
Then we had to pass by Ölanda, one of Ölands airports (not in use) because Andy had solved the mystery cache. So we made sure to take it – when we were in the area. And since the family I married into are quite involved in the aviation industry, I guess it was just one of those things =)
Then we continued up the coastline to Ölands northern tip and to visit the Långe Erik (tall Erik) lighthouse. When we got there the weather was alright, but we could see the lighthouse from a distance but on our way back the fog rolled in and we couldn’t see the lighthouse from about 100 m.
We decided that it was time to find our night spot and we decieded to try and find a place where my parents-in-law talked about, but we didn’t really find it and ended up at a place that we acutally really liked, Hagskog, and we got to enjoy the sunset over main land Sweden.
For dinner we had chicken filéets, boiled new potatoes, sallad and a garlic and herbs sauce. Really good!
Maybe a walk along the beach now and hopefully a good nights sleep awaits us. We do so much running around, exploring and caching during the day that at 8 p.m. we are pretty much dead.  Todays total cache count is: 14 caches, and we have just logged our 400th cache! Yay for us.
